Haiku’s aren’t really 5, 7 and 5 syllables. Wikipedia says they’re “three phrases of 5, 7, and 5 moras respectively”—moras meaning, “a unit of sound used in phonology that determines syllable weight (which in turn determines stress or timing) in some languages.” There’s more to it than that but for my purpose, that’s enough.
